UN Promoter of Poverty Conference disrespect Delegates
By
Katrina Lucas, Head of Public Affairs, Public Law
Centre
It was a stressful day for delegates. The handling of the Conference by the primary promoter United Nations Development Programme [UNDP] appeared to make use of delegates, participants and observers, without giving any of those people any kind of recognition or respect. There was a general consensus that many who travelled thousands of miles to the Netherlands, were made use of by the Organisers
The Public Law Centre team of observers comprised of our officials from Sweden, Ghana, Nigeria, Greece, Egypt, and United States.
Mr. John-Salakov was one of the first invited guests to see a copy of the Rotterdam Declaration. He said, “How on earth could they do this kind of thing? Why did they publish the Declaration in the absence of the Delegates? And who drafted it”
Africans were incensed
When words spread like bushfire yesterday that a Mayor from a French speaking African country made a speech during a Workshop Presentation concerning “my sick” country and how he “wished” the United Nations Development Programme would “give us money for my country”, many participants from the African Continent were shocked.
Most of the English speaking Africans who heard the “begging bowl” speech, hastily removed the headphones. They did not wish to hear any more of that.
